When you finish CNA training and begin looking for a job, you will no doubt attend a number of interviews. At each one, the interviewer will ask you a series of questions to determine why you want to work at the facility, how well you did in CNA training, and what skills, personal qualities, and ideas you will bring to the job.

While most interview questions will be straightforward and helpful to the facility when they are determining whether or not to hire you, there are some questions you need to be aware of before heading in. These questions are unethical or even illegal for an employer to ask, and you need to know that you have a right to not answer them.

After CNA Training: Why Employers Ask Illegal Interview Questions

There are a number of reasons why an employer might ask a question during your interview after CNA training that is unethical or illegal. Sometimes employers are simply ignorant of the law. Other times the interviewer is untrained.

Unfortunately, there are times when an interviewer will know exactly what they are doing, and they will ask these questions simply out of bias, discrimination, or just to obtain the information they want. This is why it is so important for you to understand what interview questions are legal and which are not after CNA training.

Illegal Interview Questions You Shouldn’t Answer After CNA Training

  • Age- The interviewer cannot ask your age under any circumstance, and they cannot use sneaky questions, such as “When did you graduate from high school?” to determine your age.
  • Religion- This country is made up of many different types of religions, and they should not be a factor when interviewing for a position after CNA training. Interviewers may not ask what religion you follow or any question related to it.
  • Family Status- Some employers assume that if you have a family you may not be able to meet job expectations because of your obligations to family. This is unfair and prejudicial, and any questions about your relationship status, family, or future plans for a family are not acceptable.
  • Health Status- While employers want to make sure you are up for the job after CNA training, they can in no way ask you questions about the state of your health. They can’t discuss your weight, whether or not you drink, whether you are a smoker, or specific questions about any disabilities you might have. They may ask if you use illicit drugs, but cannot ask what drugs you use. The only acceptable question they can pose relating to your health is, “Can you perform the functions of this job?”
  • Nationality- When applying for a position after CNA training, you cannot legally be asked if you are a U.S. citizen. You can, however, be asked if you are legally eligible to work in the United States. In addition, interviewers cannot ask about your native country or what your native language is. They can, however, ask what languages you speak, read, and write.
