After CNA Training: When Your Co-worker Has a Bad Day

When you begin working after CNA training, you will find that no one day is like another. Some days will be fantastic; you’ll get all your charting done, your residents will be in the perfect mood, and time will just fly by. Other days, however, will seem to drag on for eternity, your patients will swear and yell at you, and no matter how hard you try, you’ll still be sitting at the CNA desk as the next shift comes in, frantically writing down patient vital signs.

These days can be difficult to get through, and sometimes you might wonder whether it is all worth it in the end. But then a good day follows it and you once again realize why it was you enrolled in CNA training to begin with.

While it can be difficult to get through the bad days, what do you do if you aren’t the one having a bad day after CNA training? What if it is your colleague who is feeling down about themselves and contemplating their career choice? If this is the case, here are a few steps you can take to brighten their day and remind them of better times to come.

After CNA Training: Uplifting Coworkers

  • Listen- One of the easiest things you can do to improve a co-worker’s day is listen to them. Let them vent all their frustrations to you and make sure they know their thoughts are safe with you. Sometimes it just takes five minutes of getting everything out in the open to make a person feel so much better. Being there for them and listening to them will also let them know that someone actually cares about them.
  • Review Their Strengths- When a co-worker is having a bad day after CNA training and everything seems to be going wrong, they can sometimes feel as if they aren’t any good at being a CNA. When it happens, it is important for you to remind them exactly why they passed CNA training. They have strengths, even when everything seems to be falling apart. Remind them what they are good at and help restore their confidence.
  • Help Out- After CNA training, there is nothing more kind than having a co-worker come and ask if you need help. This small act can greatly reduce your stress level and improve your attitude. When your co-worker needs help on a bad day after CNA training, remember how good it felt to receive assistance. This bit of teamwork will not only help to uplift your co-worker after CNA training, but will also improve the entire atmosphere of the unit or floor.

Helping Co-workers After CNA Training

Life after CNA training can be hard, and it’s up to each of us to try to make each day a little better for our fellow CNAs. If you notice your co-worker isn’t have the greatest of days, take steps to uplift them and provide them with the support they need to make it through the shift with a smile after CNA training.
