As CNAs, we know our job is critically important. Every day, we make choices that could impact our patients’ wellbeing and often hold their life in our hands. It can be overwhelming. After CNA training, however, you can’t expect to be perfect all the time- and you can’t constantly second guess yourself.
Self-doubt is the nature of the perfectionist. They are always asking themselves if they are doing something right, if they are forgetting a step, or if they made a mistake. Listening to your own self-doubt can be exhausting, and it can actually increase the chances of you making a mistake after CNA training.
While perfectionism may be an appreciated quality in the workplace, it can take a toll. Over time, it can affect your health and result in anxiety, depression, mood swings, irritability at home, and dissatisfaction with your work after CNA training. How do you overcome this? It may not be easy, but there are steps you can take to learn how to deal with your own limitations and flaws and get over the need to be perfect all the time.
Overcoming The Need for Perfection After CNA Training
- Think always of your patients and yourself first after CNA training. People need to be loved and cared for, and they are much more important than ‘stuff.’ Their (and your) well-being is much more essential than paperwork.
- Admit that you’re human. It may be hard, but you need to understand that you aren’t a machine. Being authentic and truthful about yourself will allow you to feel other emotions, like joy, fun, happiness, and love. It may be messing, but being real is always worth it in the end.
- You don’t have to shut out all of that negative self-doubt after CNA training. Some of it will keep you on your toes and help you ensure you are providing the best care possible. However, you do need to turn it down. Listening to negative thoughts constantly will only lead to stress and burnout.
- Pay attention to your life and how you live it. If you notice signs of trouble, don’t ignore them. If you’re a perfectionist, you may find that you become rigid or anxious after CNA training. This often means you’re not taking care of yourself and your personal needs. You may be tired, hungry, angry, or lonely. These are signs you must pay attention to and take care of in order to prevent physical and mental health problems from developing.
- Don’t expect everyone around you to be a perfectionist. These expectation are much too high and will often leave you disappointed in people who are truly trying their best. Everyone is unique and flawed, and after CNA training, you’ll have the opportunity to work with many of them. Don’t judge them, embrace them as they are. You’ll be amazed at the people you’ll be able to get to know.
Letting go After CNA Training
Being a perfectionist is difficult when you have gone through CNA training and work as a CNA. Don’t let it keep you from enjoying the work you do after CNA training.
