If you’ve signed up for Red Cross CNA training or other Certified Nursing Assistant training, it is probably at least somewhat because you know it’s a career that will always be in demand. But what happens if the money for nursing care dries up? Well the good news is, it isn’t going to happen.

Below is an interesting article about those concerns.

Concerns About Paying For Nursing Care Stays
by Mark Bradshaw

Americans are living longer. But along with that comes an increased chance that we will need nursing care in the future. Have you ever researched the cost of this type of care, either in a nursing home or, even, at home? It is not cheap. It can’t deplete savings very fast. That is why it pays to think about this issue in advance.

Long term care insurance (LTCi) is becoming more popular. People can buy it from private companies or get group coveage from their jobs. It covers different types of nursing care that people may need. Plans and prices vary, so you will have to look around to see if one is right for you.

Some are set up so the premiums can be deducted from federal taxes, and these are called tax qualified plans. Others are called non-tax qualified plans. They cannot be deducted.

In a few years, we should be getting more help from the CLASS act of health reform. It provides an optional program that people can choose on a voluntary basis. The new program is still not implemented, so I do not have all of the details. From what I understand, the payments will not be enough to cover the whole cost of nursing care, but it should help some people.

Of course, there are federal health plans today. But Medicare only pays for short nursing needs. Medicaid requies patients to spend most of their money and other assets in order to qualify. These are not perfect solutions either.

Some other alternatives may be considered. There are annuities and insurance policies with provisions for nursing care. There is not one right solution for all people, but it is very important to look into the alternatives in case you need it.

Do you know about (http://www.over50web.net/health-beauty/health-care/health-care-reform-long-term-nursing-care/) health reform and long term care? Learn more, and then decide if you (http://ezinearticles.com/?Do-You-Need-Private-Long-Term-Care-Insurance?&id=2404696/) need long term care insurance.

Red cross CNA classes are still some of the best opportunities for becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. Though there are an increasing number of online CNA training programs, and many of them are very good, this is the type of profession requiring a lot of “hands-on” skills. This is the one caveat of online programs – you don’t get any actual lab experience.

When compared to campus courses, Red Cross CNA training ranks at the top of the list in terms of both low cost, and high-quality instruction. One benefit that campus courses still excel at is in the area of job placement. Most schools maintain a list of available employers and opportunities, and some have strong relationships with local hospitals, nursing homes, etc.

Depending on where in the country you live, the Red Cross probably has classes somewhere within driving distance. Of course this isn’t the case absolutely everywhere, but chances are better than good that you will find one not terribly far away. If you do live in one of those areas of the country where nothing is very close, then it becomes a moot point.

Cost is increasingly a factor for many people. Wherever you choose to get your Certified Nursing Assistant training and certification, it’s important to take advantage of available student loans. There are also a number of other grants and loans available.

In many cases, if you choose to train at a health-care facility such as a hospital or nursing home, they often will pick up the cost of your training. Generally, the facility will want a commitment to work there in return for covering your costs. These commitments usually last for one to two years. For those people unable to afford the costs on their own however, this is a wonderful opportunity.

Becoming a CNA is still one of the most rewarding career choices a person can make. As a Nursing Assistant, you are doing something truly worthwhile with yourself, and legitimately making a difference in the lives of your patients, and their families. What makes this an even better career choice is that it is very lucrative, meaning you’ll have a well-paying job that you can feel good about. And just as importantly, CNA’s enjoy a “sellers market” as far as job prospects are concerned. There is an ongoing shortage of trained professionals, and in nearly every part of the country, you will have your choice of many, many job openings and work environments.

Red Cross CNA classes still top the list of training opportunities, however much more importantly than where you get your certification, is that you simply get it somewhere. This is a choice you will never regret, and an investment that will pay you both personal and financial benefits for the rest of your working life.

There are a number of professions that are quite demanding and rewarding at the same time. Working as a can or Certified Nursing Assistant is not easy, but you will certainly love the work and getting to see your patients get better. You will take pride in helping them cope with and overcome their illness. However, before you get to practice you will need to undergo training. The courses last for anywhere between 6 and 12 weeks and this is certainly an advantage. However, the more important question is: how hard is CNA training?

The level of difficulty is different for the different people, but it can be safely said that this type of training is relatively easy. You will study the most important aspects of medical subjects such as anatomy and physiology. If you were relatively good in biology as school, you will certainly find these disciplines to be relatively easy and even fun. You will also have classes and infection control. These are not necessarily more demanding, but they are definitely not pleasant. Still, you will not find it hard to go through these. Nutrition is also present as a subject. A lot of people will find the classes devoted to healthy dieting easy, interesting and rewarding. Generally, the schooling part of the training is not difficult and the majority of students complete it successfully. Those who go through Red Cross CNA classes will have an easy time of it.

How hard is CNA training in terms of hands-on experience? You will have to affirm and put into practice the skills you acquire in class during the so called clinical activities. This part of the training is not hard either, but you have to be focused and dedicated in order to make the most out of it and get the most beneficial results. Given that the course is relatively short, you will really need to use the practice time to improve your skills and gain as much experience as possible.

In order to do well in your CNA training you need to have an excellent class attendance record. You are allowed to miss no more than 6 hours so you really have to take this course seriously and have effective time management. A lot of people find it hard to be punctual and to attend all classes, but given that the training will be through in no more than 3 months, you can really afford to reduce your outings and even to sleep a bit less.

How hard is CNA training in terms of exams? You need to complete two tests successfully in order to become a certified nursing assistant. You have to pass the skills test first. Then you can be allowed to take the written one. You need 80% or higher on your final exam in order to get the certificate you dream of. This might seem way too high to some people, but as said earlier the knowledge and the skills you need to have are not particularly complex. Generally, as long as you study hard and put a lot of effort into practice, you will do great.

Obtaining a CNA license and certification to practice as a nursing assistant opens up many professional doors in the medical field. Many people become nursing assistants because they want to help others. They also use the position to gain valuable skills that are then used to help others. Many CNA’s are urged to obtain additional training and schooling so that they can increase their technical skills and earn more money. Being a nurse assistant is a stepping stone for advancement in the medical field.

A certified nursing assistant trains to have the ability to assist individuals in a variety of ways. This assistance is required for those who are incapable of caring for themselves because of physical or mental conditions. A nurse assistant can assist an individual with daily maintenance in a long term care facility, nursing home, hospital or even in the home of the individual. It is recommended that you build a work history that reflects the ability to perform patient care in a variety of settings. Different settings will require the use of certain skills more often even though the duties might be the same. In addition, this working in a variety of settings will give you an idea of which environment they are most comfortable and productive in. As a certified nursing assistant becomes more familiar with the medical field, working in different settings will help him/her gain more experience in a variety of settings. This can be used a reference for deciding which areas he/she may want to specialize in later during the medical career.

Being a CNA is a job that will provide the fundamentals for nursing care. Many registered nurses begin their careers this way. In fact, many registered nurses cite their previous experience in the field as very valuable to their ability to be a good nurse. Working as a nursing aid provides a basic foundation for patient care, and this is very important for caring for people in any facility and under any specialty. Those medical professionals that begin their careers as such are more likely to have a better understanding of what is required to care for an individual basis. The foundation that is provided by working as a nursing assistant is priceless.

After obtaining the certification to work in the field, individuals should focus on increasing their skill sets. Acquiring additional certifications and obtaining more schooling will be very beneficial regardless of the path you decide to take. The development of new skills will allow you to obtain more responsibility and more pay. Many agencies also recommend that their clients continue their education; some places of employment are even willing to pay for continuing education. Many practicing CNA professionals continue working as they go to school to become practical (LPN) or registered nurses (RN’s). The foundation provided by working in the field proves to be very valuable when pursuing higher levels of education for a more advanced nursing career.

Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant program is the beginning of career in the medical career that can lead to advancement. To be more marketable to employers it is essential that all graduates of a state approved program complete a state exam for CNA certification. This exam tests the nursing assistant knowledge of the applicants and ensures that the applicants are properly trained. Those interested in taking the test will have to pay a fee for the certification test. All applicants should arrive to the testing center prepared to take the written knowledge test and properly dressed to take the clinical portion of the test. Successful completion of both portion of the certification exam are required in order to receive a passing grade and have one’s name placed on the state registry.

Nearly all states require that people working as nursing assistants complete a certification test. This test is a combination of both written and technical comprehension. The written portion of the test is usually multiple choice, although this can vary by state, and tests the comprehension of a variety of nursing assistant skills. Applicants are usually given a certain amount of time to complete this portion of the test. After applicants finish the written portion of the test they will be required to take the technical portion of the test. The technical portion of the test allows applicants to show their mastery in performing certain skills that are required when working as a nursing assistant. It is necessary that applicants come to the testing center properly dressed so that they can complete the technical portion of the test.

Upon the completion of both portions of the test, applicants will be notified of the passing or failure of the examination usually through the Board of Nursing or via the testing center. If applicants successfully complete and pass the certification exam, their names will be placed on the state registry. Applicants are, in some cases, provided with a certified nursing assistant card. In some states there are different types of certifications for nursing assistants. These certifications provide the certified nursing assistant with additional skill sets that allow them to perform additional responsibilities. These additional certifications include the geriatric nursing assistant certification (GNA) that allows certified nursing assistants to work in long term care facilities. The home health aide (HHA) certification allows a certified nursing assistant to work in home health care agencies. The certified medicine aide certification (CMA) allows a certified nursing assistant to administer medicine in long term care facilities. The CMA certification requires the certified nursing assistant have at least a year of experience as a CNA, and the CNA must have taken a 60 hour approved medicine aide course.

Obtaining the CNA certification as a nursing assistant allows applicants to work in a variety of settings assisting individuals with daily care. In addition, having the certification also allows creates opportunities to expand your skill set by obtaining additional training and then taking those advanced certifications.

Working as a Certified Nursing Assistant or CNA is seen as the initial step in a long career in the medical field. Many people become nursing assistants because they enjoy helping people and enjoy the stability, flexibility and room for advancement that the medical field offers. There are many ways that a certified nursing assistant can further their career. Increasing one’s skill set is one of the best ways to gain more technical skills thus in increasing one’s responsibilities and pay.

There are a variety of ways in which a certified nursing assistant can expand his/her skill set. One method is to obtain additional certifications. In conjunction with the certification as a nursing assistant, there are a number of other certifications that allow a CNA to work in a variety of settings and perform more advanced functions.

A certified nursing assistant can obtain certification to work in long term care facilities working with the elderly as a geriatric nursing assistant (GNA). A certified nursing assistant can also obtain certification to work in a home health agency as a home health aide (HHA). Most home health aides either travel to the home of a patient or live in the patient’s home and provide extensive daily care. There are also medicine aide certifications. To become a certified medicine aide in most states you must be employed as a certified nursing assistant for at least a year and have completed a state approved medicine aide course. These additional certifications provide the CNA with the ability to increase his or her skill set and perform more complicated technical skills and to obtain more responsibility.

There are a number of ways in which certified nursing assistants can expand their skills. Many will take the initiative to complete the additional certifications on their own. These certifications can be obtained by contacting the State Board of Nursing. The State of Board of Nursing can provide the certified nursing assistant with the information needed to complete and prerequisites such as taking additional training courses prior to testing for the certifications.

In some cases, a CNA’s employer may be willing to pay for additional certifications. There are times when employers, such as a long term care facility or a home health agency, may be willing to pay for additional certifications. This is done when the employer has the need for qualified applicants with more advanced skill sets. The employer will pay for the certified nursing assistant to complete the additional training and will provide a pay raise for gaining the additional certification. In circumstances such as these the employer will ask the certified nursing assistant to agree to remain employed at their facility for a specified amount of time. This option to gain additional skills should be taken advantage of if offered by an employer.

Expanding one’s skill set as a certified nursing assistant is very advantageous. The CNA with a number of certifications is highly sought after by many organizations. The more skills certified nursing assistants acquire the more responsibility and the more pay they are likely to earn.

There are a variety of ways to obtain training to become a certified nursing assistant, including free CNA training. There are actually a number of ways that you can obtain nursing assistant training free of cost. A number of long term care facilities, nursing homes and even some hospitals offer interested people the option of free CNA training. There are usually some stipulations that come with accepting free training from an organization or business. If you are looking for an opportunity to change your career and move into the medical field seeking free training may be a good choice for you.

Many of the organizations and businesses that offer free CNA classes are nursing homes or long term care facilities. There are some hospitals that may offer this type of training but it is rare. A person that is interested in becoming a certified nursing assistant through a free program would have to contact the nursing homes and long term care facilities in the area to find out which ones offer this type of program. Not all facilities offer free CNA training so you have to do a little research in order to locate the places that do. You may be able to contact the State Board of Nursing to get a list of approved CNA training programs. This will help you narrow down the list of places to contact regarding free nursing assistant training.

The nursing homes and long term care facilities that offer free training classes do so with the intention of creating a strong, well trained employee. If you accept the chance to complete a free nursing assistant program then you must realize that the company that provides the training will expect you to accept employment at their facility after certification. They will require that you stay employed at their facility for a specific amount of time. In some cases you may have to sign a contract agreeing to remain employed for a certain length of time.

The free nursing assistant training provided will include both written and practical sections just as any other program. In order for most nursing programs to be state approved they must offer a minimum number of learning hours for both the classroom and the clinical portions of the program. Programs offered through a long term care facility or a nursing home are no different. Participants in the free program will have to participate in classroom learning to gain knowledge of the nursing assistant profession. Likewise, the clinical portion of the program may be performed within the nursing home or long term care facility amongst patients. This is a great way to obtain the needed skills to become a certified nursing assistant.

After completing the program some facilities will allow you to work in their organizations while you are waiting to take the test to become a certified nursing assistant. Some facilities will even pay for you to take the certification test. Upon successfully passing the CNA certification test you will work at the facility that provided the free training. You will be able to work a variety of shifts which will include 8 or 12 hours shifts that will more than likely include weekends. You have the choice of working mornings, evenings or overnight shifts. Committing to work in a nursing home in exchange for nursing assistant training can prove to be very profitable for your future.

With the availability of free CNA training classes, anyone with the desire can enter this exciting and rewarding field, and launch themselves into one of the most worthwhile professions there are. If you’ve wanted to enter the health care field but were concerned about the cost of education, you no longer have that barrier.

Being in the front line of nursing, is not really like being in the line of fire when used as cannon fodder in a foot war, but it does have its ups and downs. When you are a Certified Nursing Assistant, you are in the front line of nursing. However the up side is, that once you have enrolled in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program, completed your training and gotten some valuable on the job experience, it opens up a whole new world of skills improvement possibilities to anyone with the will to improve their circumstances. There are bridging programs and all kinds of developmental and educational possibilities which exist.

The Care-Giver

A CNA is definitely not the most glorified job in the field of nursing, no matter where they are deployed, be it a hospital, clinic, nursing home or whatever. But it is certainly one of the most vital. The daily operations carried out – the duties of a certified nursing assistant – are the basis of what drives smooth operations, and it may be a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it. The beauty of being in the front-line is that it set standards for the good well being of the patient in care.

Sick people who are helpless are in general very grateful for the smallest things, just being helped to sit comfortably, or a refreshing bed bath, feels better to some patients than any medicine in the world. Compassion and skill is what sets the CAN apart from the rest and makes them the best. It is this that helps patients enjoy a stress free recovery, or event eh last days of their lives, and being stress free, is like winning the lottery, finally you can relax! This is how important the CNA job is.

The Career

Many of the best RN’s used being a CNA as a stepping stone to enter this career, it is a fantastic entry point into a nursing career. And it doesn’t matter what job you do, having to start from the bottom rung of the ladder always stands a person in better stead in the long run. Why do you think so many big business men start their sons off in the mail-room where they start. Because it is a good life lesson and you don’t come on board with the same arrogance as a hot shot graduate might in an instant management position.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Programs

Certified Nursing Assistant Programs ensure that the trainee is ready to start working with real live patients in the shortest possible time. They are even able to teach RN graduates a thing or two about working with people when they come onto the wards for the first time after sitting in a classroom for so long.

They require a GED or High School Diploma and the completion of a 6 – 12 week CNA certification. These programs can be found online, in hospitals and at a community college. If you want to start in the “mail room” of nursing and work your way to the top, this is the way to do it. Remember all through your training, you will be salaried, by doing things this way.

In order to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant, you must complete a nurses aide training course, then pass the CNA certification test given by the State Board of Nursing. The certification test consists of two parts, a written exam and a hands-on or ‘practical’ CNA skills test. Licensing is done by the state, so you will want to register for testing in the state you expect to work in.

In most cases, you will be testing with a group. The written exam is usually given before the skills test, and everyone will take the test at the same time. You will have to answer approximately 100 multiple-choice questions, and are usually given up to two hours to complete them. The written test covers patient care and protocols, patient monitoring and record-keeping, laboratory and testing procedures.

Everything on the written portion will have been covered in your CNA training classes. It is a good idea to review your class materials, handouts, and charts before the certification test, particularly if you won’t be taking it right after completing the course. You can find some sample testing questions for the CNA exam online.

Following the written portion, the instructor takes the finished tests, and then individuals will be called on to perform their skills test one at a time. You may be asked to bring a “model” or helper with you to facilitate the skills testing. This person would act as your patient for you to demonstrate your skills on. The particulars of the skills test will vary, and may not be the same from person to person. You won’t know which skills you will be asked to perform until the actual testing.

You can expect the practical exam to cover the most common skills you will encounter. This might include performing measurements of vital signs – blood pressure, pulse, and respiration; demonstrating the proper way make a bed, both with and without a patient in it; ambulating or moving your patient – helping them dress, moving them in to and out of a wheel chair, etc.; and responding to emergencies such as choking.

You won’t know the outcome of your CNA certification test right then and there; results will be mailed to you. However if you’ve been attentive in class and understand what you’ve been taught, and taken the time to study and review your materials prior to taking the test, you should have no problem passing. Once you have earned your certification, you are then free to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, Nurse’s Aide, or other similar position at any hospital, nursing home, or other facility in your state.

There are so many great reasons to become a Certified Nursing Assistant: plenty of CNA jobs available; choices in work environments; the opportunity to make a difference in people’s lives every day; and the ability to earn a good living. The average annual salary for a CNA is almost $30,000.

CNA training can be completed in as little as two weeks through a hospital or nursing home, slightly longer through the Red Cross CNA training, or through a community college training program in just a few months. Once training and licensing is completed, a Certified Nursing Assistant can see an average starting salary between $11/hour and $14/hour.

Exactly how much a Certified Nursing Assistant earns will vary somewhat, depending on geographic location, workplace, experience, and other factors. A CNA working in a hospital in New York, for instance, will earn approximately 8% more than a similar position in Arizona. Generally speaking, salaries follow COA’s or “Cost Of Living” indexes. The more expensive area’s such as the Northeastern US generally pay higher wages than the mid-West.

The type of position will have a bearing on earnings as well. Hospitals are usually the highest salary, followed by nursing homes, then patient homes. Even within a hospital, pay will vary by department: a nurse assistant working in ICU – the Intensive Care Unit – will often receive a slightly higher wage than a nurse assistant in a lower-stress department.

A working CNA can also expect their pay scale to go up with experience. As a profession, nursing – and Certified Nursing Assistants in particular – have a fairly high ‘burn-out’ rate. As the job often carries with it a great deal of physical and emotional stress and exhaustion, some people find they don’t want to stay in the field. One result is that the numbers of CNA’s with experience diminishes. Another result is that there are plenty of jobs in the field available.

In addition to base pay, most nurse assistant and medical assistant positions offer benefits, such as health coverage and retirement savings plans. While some nursing positions are filled through agencies, and those typically do not have the same types of benefits, most medical facilities and institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes, medical clinics, and such do offer excellent benefits packages to their employees.

The medical and health care fields are virtually recession-proof. Even in the toughest economic times, a properly licensed Certified Nursing Assistant rarely has difficulty finding a good-paying job. There were estimated to be over 500,000 individuals employed as nursing assistants, medical assistants, etc. in 2008. As a profession, nursing assistants are ranked well above average in the field for job growth, job sustainability, and potential. It is expected to remain one of the market’s fastest-growing jobs for years to come.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projection, the projected growth rate for nurses aides and nursing assistants is expected to grow by a combined 28 percent. This is even faster than the medical health care field in general, far outpacing the expected 14 percent growth of LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurse) between the years 2006 and 2016.

By becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, you take the first steps towards a rewarding and fulfilling career, unlike any other. As a medical professional, you will earn respect, personal satisfaction, job security, and financial safety.
