If you are looking for financial assistance with your CNA training in New York, here is the information specific for the city of New York. Certified nursing assistants are in demand in large, urban, metropolitan cities, even if the rate of employment is down in other areas. According to the Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for CNA training graduates will continue to increase from now through 2020.

The current cost of CNA training in the United States ranges anywhere from $1,000 to as high as $5,000, depending on where the course is offered. In New York City, CNA training averages between $1500 to $2,000 but not everyone is able to afford this. Even with payment programs, the individuals who are most in need of jobs find it difficult, if not impossible to come up with the CNA training tuition. If this sounds like you, we may have good news for you. Here are several avenues you may not have tried that can offer you CNA training at a reduced cost or sometimes completely free. If you qualify for a grant to pay for you CNA training, this means the total cost will be provided for you. On the other hand, there are some programs who offer to pay for a good portion, leaving the aspiring CNA student to pay for the remainder.

CNA Training through the New York City Department of Education

The New York City Department of Education offers free CNA training in five regions. To qualify, potential students will need to be full time residents of New York City and fall within certain income qualifications. To find out more about how the NYC Department of Education can help you obtain CNA training at free or low cost, visit schools.nyc.org.

CNA Training Through Workforce 1 Grants

Workforce 1 Grants are provided to qualified residents of New York whose household income is not over $56 thousand dollars annually. If you fall within this range, you may qualify for free CNA training by becoming a member of Workforce 1 (which is free of charge to join).

Workforce 1 is a service provided by the New York City Department of Small Business Services who helps prepare candidates for jobs opportunities in New York City. In order to provide strong matches between candidates and employers, Workforce 1 will often help provide education for members.

In 2010 alone, Workforce 1 helped to place over 30,000 New York residents in gainful employment. They provide industry specific education and job placement in the areas of healthcare, manufacturing, and transportation fields. To find out more about CNA training available through the Workforce 1 program, find their site through www.nyc.gov.

You can also contact the Healthcare Career Center by calling 718-609-2144. Why wait? If you live in New York City, put your best foot forward and find out how you can get assistance with your CNA training. With a little bit of work, soon you’ll be well on your way to an exciting career as a confident, qualified, CNA training graduate.

Ongoing CNA Training

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) provide critical support to the staff of hospitals, nursing homes, and outpatient clinics. One of the primary duties of a CNA is to keep patients under their care safe from injury caused by accidents. Unfortunately, accidents are not uncommon in facilities responsible for caring for sick, recovering, or elderly patients. To reduce patient fall numbers, a new CNA training program has been created that focuses on assessment, education, and intervention.

Assessment CNA Training

Assessment is the first stage of the new CNA training program designed to drastically reduce the number of patient falls that occur while a patient is under medical care. The assessment process helps a CNA identify which new patient is at a higher risk of being involved in a fall. During this stage a CNA can give staff members a chance to prepare for accidents by telling other care takers about the patients higher probability of being involved in a fall.

New CNA Training Educates Staff and Visitors

After a patient has been identified as a possible a fall risk, the new CNA training program works to educate all those who are directly responsible for the care of the patient. This includes dieticians, nurses, and physical therapists. During the education period all those who will interact with the patient are taught how to respond.

Caregivers are shown how to recognize potential hazards that could cause a fall and possibly avoid an accident all together. In addition to learning how to recognize and avoid hazards, staff are shown where alarms are located in a patients room. Most health systems also establish a private code that is announced over the building’s intercom system to call help to a specific location without alarming visitors and other residents.

Education goes beyond additional CNA training, the family and friends of a patient are made aware of a patient’s risk of injury because of a fall. The injury caused by a fall can affect all those involved in the patient’s life, and understanding how they can help prevent a fall will make a patient’s relatives and visitors more diligent. Giving handouts to visitors or having patient’s primary care taker talk to visitors helps make those people who are part of a patient’s recovery aware of the danger.

Knowing When to Intervene

CNA training teaches a CNA when and how to use intervention to reduce the number of patient falls in a facility. In many situations, a patient is encouraged to care for themselves and intervention requires a CNA to recognize when a patient should be given additional help. Patient care needs that have a higher risk of accident such as bathing and using the restroom may require an intervention.

The new training provided to CNAs teaches a CNA when to intervene in a patient’s daily routine. A CNA must know when to act to protect a patient from accident, and when to allow a patient to care for herself in order to speed recovery and promote independence. By combining admission assessments, education programs, and intervention the new CNA training program will decrease the number of patient falls while they are under medical care.

In order to increase your skills and continue to be a valuable team member, consider CNA training such as this new program.

The curriculum not only complies with federal standards for CNAs, but also includes individual state requirements that may not be the same as the federal requirements.

What Kind of CNA Training Does the Red Cross Offer?

For more than twenty years the Red Cross has been involved in CNA training. This organization, which provides training in about 36 cities within the United States, is extremely capable of providing the correct knowledge to student who want to be enter into the medical field and become certified nursing assistants.

Some of the knowledge that you, as the student, will gain during this type of training program include:

Taking vital signs

Measuring input and output

Basic hygiene

How to feed and bathe patients

Patient rights and ethical treatment

How to correctly lift and / or move a patient

Records and keeping charts

Benefits of Red Cross CNA Training

Red Cross CNA training is structured in several different formats and is extremely different than other types of CNA training, like online nursing assistant courses. You will benefit from text book learning, but will also experience other types of training, including lectures, lab practice, and clinical experience. These training experiences will fully prepare you for the State CNA exam that you are required to take at the end of your classes and will also help prepare you to be a more competent nursing assistant.

Another benefit to the Red Cross CNA training program is the fact that it provides the correct amount of knowledge while moving at a fast pace than many other CNA training programs. This means a nice jumpstart to entering the field and working as a professional CNA.

With the hands-on training that is provided by the Red Cross, you will also be able to experience and practice with the different types of equipment you will be using in the nursing field. The Red Cross is able to provide their students with the following equipment training:

Lifts

Thermometers and Blood Pressure Equipment

Mannequins for CPR and other CNA training

Hospital Beds

Bed Pans

Hospital gowns and sheets

Wheelchair

This equipment is used by the CNA on a daily basis, so providing the real-life training opportunities allows the CNA to become familiar with them and feel more at ease and confident.

Another benefit to using the Red Cross training program is the fact that the organization will cover the cost of the state test you will be required to take at the end of your CNA training classes. If you are serious about your future in the health care industry, you may want to consider Red Cross CNA training.

Is Red Cross CNA Training Right For You?

No matter what type of CNA training you decide on, becoming a CNA can be both an exciting and deeply rewarding career. The Red Cross offers an excellent training program. If you can handle the fast paced curriculum and want to begin your career as quickly as possible, Red Cross CNA training may be the right choice for you.

A question we are asked quite often is whether or not a high school student can take their CNA training while in high school. This is a great question indeed, and just proves that there are extremely forward thinking and motivated students out there, concerned about their careers enough to want to get their CNA training completed as soon as possible.

The answer to this question isn’t quite as easy, since it will depend on your individual high school, along with the state laws governing CNA training courses. If CNA training is allowed in your high school, it will be considered a Post Secondary Education Option (PSEO) or Dual Enrollment. If your particular school and state do offer the option of certified nursing assistant training, here are the steps you’ll need to take in order to enroll.

Are You Ready for CNA Training Classes?

First of all, you’ll need to decide if CNA training is right for you. A CNA is trained to provide patients with hands on basic care during their entire shift. Whether you are employed in a hospital center, an adult care facility, a rehabilitation center, or a specialized hospital or center (such as Hospice), you’ll still be providing many of the same duties. What is hands on basic care? These are the duties necessary for a patient to experience a normal quality of life. Basic care can include bathing, toileting assistance, grooming, dressing, feeding, oral care, and sometimes rehabilitative help, such as range of motion exercises.

If you are not the type of individual who enjoys providing hands on assistance, or if you think you would be queasy if helping a patient with toileting or grooming, then a career as a nursing assistance may not be for you. Also consider that most CNAs are in charge of several patients at once, so there is a degree of multi-tasking involved. If these all sound like tasks you’d be interested in, your next step is to make an appointment with your school counselor.

Steps to PSEO or Dual Enrollment for the CNA Training Course

Talk to your high school guidance counselor and check to see if your school offers post secondary education options or dual enrollment and how to go about pursuing your nursing assistant certification.

One of the requirements for dual enrollment is a certain grade point average that you must maintain throughout high school. Generally, it’s about a 3.5. You’ll have to prove that you are able to handle your high school classes along with the demanding amount of studying you will be doing for a college level CNA training class.

Next, make an appointment with a college administrator to learn the requirements and plan your enrollment. The CNA training class consists of classroom time as well as hands on training and clinical experience.

What Are the Advantages of Dual Enrollment or PSEO? Free CNA Training!

The reason most high school students make the decision to dual enroll is because training is free for any post secondary education option for the entire time the student is in high school. That means you can receive your complete CNA training while in high school for free. If you already are sure this is the career for you, dual enrollment is a smart choice that can get you the CNA training you are looking for, free of charge!

A term with that many hits has to be legitimate, right? Well, not necessarily. If you want to know if these one week CNA training classes are worth the investment then you’ve come to the right place. After we noticed the ads and billboards that are cropping up everywhere, we did a bit of investigating.

CNA Training Class Basics

At its most fundamental level, a CNA training class must offer a minimum of 72 hours of training, with 16 of those hours being hands-on clinical training. This is a requirement in order to qualify to take the nursing assistant exam. A traditional, in-depth CNA training class can last from 9 to 12 months. More popular, shorter versions of the course typically last from 6-12 weeks.

In some cases, aspiring CNAs may receive their training from an operating nursing facility. Although it is rare, this provides a sort of on-the-job training for those who are working to become a CNA, but have not received their certification or participated in any type of CNA training class. Finding an opportunity such as this can be difficult since most employers prefer to hire someone who already possesses the required level of training and is ready to go right to work.

So Is It Possible to Complete A CNA Training Class in Only a Week?

Well, yes, it is possible, although it probably isn’t a good idea. Since you can take the test to become certified after only 72 training hours, an intensive one week study course that includes clinical experience at a nursing facility will qualify you to take the exam. However, it probably isn’t going to allow you to be the best nursing assistant you could be. You will spend approximately 14 ½ hours per day in training based on a 5 day week, and more than 10 hours per day in training if it is extended for a full 7 days.

What this translates to is that you will essentially participate is a crash course CNA training class. The amount of information you are able to retain will depend largely on your learning style and abilities. Since there will be no time to stop and revisit an idea in such a fast-paced course, any topics or procedures that aren’t clear to you will remain unclear to you unless you do your own independent research. A one week CNA training course may help you get through the national exam by the skin of your teeth, but it won’t prepare you fully for the job you are trying to do.

CNA Training Class Bottom Line

If you have some kind of background in nursing or working in a medical office, or you are a particularly fast learner, then a one week CNA training class may be all you need to do well. In most cases however, it is a much better idea to enroll in a minimum of a 6 week CNA training class program. This will give you the opportunity to study, ask questions, and really absorb everything that you need to know in order to perform well.

Becoming a certified nursing assistance can be your gateway into the rewarding field of health care. More than just another “job,” a career as a CNA involves working with patients to provide their basic daily needs while also lending emotional support and encouragement.

If you are already working in a hospital or other medical facility and have the desire to obtain your certification as a nursing assistant, free CNA training might be closer than you think.

Read the following tips and advice to find out if you’ve got what it takes to earn free CNA training from your employer.

Free CNA Training from Your Employer

Working in a medical facility as a front desk or hospital admissions clerk, kitchen staff, or other non-medical position can actually give you an advantage if you are looking for free CNA training. Before approaching the issue, ask yourself the following questions:

Have you put in at least 6 months in your current position?

Have you experienced positive feedback about your current position?

Have you proven to be team oriented, working for the better overall good of every staff member, regardless of who gets the credit?

Have you been proactive in your position, looking for ways to improve your performance?

Have you been on time and ready to work every day that you’ve been scheduled?

Have you offered to fill in for others when possible, proving to be a valuable staff member?

If you can answer yes to most of these questions, you are a perfect candidate to approach your employer about free CNA training opportunities within your medical facility.

How to Approach Your Employer about Free CNA Training

Approaching your employer or direct supervisor may seem intimidating at first thought. When you fully consider the big picture of what you are doing, I’m sure you won’t feel the same level of apprehension. Yes, you are ultimately asking for free CNA training at the expense of your employer. So, realistically, you are asking them to make an investment in you. Why would your employer be willing to do this?

Simple, because if you sincerely do possess the qualities that were outlined in the bullet points above, you are a valuable part of the medical staff, and will be even more valuable to your medical facility if you are being used to give their patients the highest level of care.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a certified nursing assistant is a highly valued position. The need for qualified CNAs is expected to rise at a steady level over the next decade. Since you’ve already proven yourself to your health care facility, your supervisor, and your peers, they will be wise to invest in your education. Larger companies generally have no problem providing training for their best staff members. It’s a win/win situation. They fulfill a need and desire that you have, and you are providing them with a faithful, well trained, proactive staff member, who will continue to work with them for years to come.

When approaching your supervisor, go ahead and set up a personal one-on-one appointment. During the meeting, voice your desire to move into the position of certified nursing assistant. Let them know you have a strong desire to help others and feel that a CNA position would fulfill this desire. By giving your employer a well thought out plan that doesn’t sound like a fleeting thought, you’ll be much more likely to be taken seriously.

Once your supervisor realizes that CNA training is something you’ve fully weighed out in your mind, chances are good that your company will either place you in an in-house training program (if they offer one), or will find training for you. Your classes will either be completely free of charge for you, or your employer may work on a “reimbursement program.” With this option, you’ll pay the CNA training program costs up front and will be reimbursed upon successful completion of the CNA training. This is an excellent incentive for you to do well.

We hope this article has your wheels turning. If you are reading this article and have firsthand experience with free CNA training through your employer, please leave a comment and let us know how it worked out for you!

If you are looking for free CNA training classes, you’re not alone. Many individuals have both the motivation and the drive to pass the CNA training class if they were afforded the opportunity. If you are between the age of 16 and 24 and searching for the ideal way to break into the medical field as a certified nursing assistant, Job Corps may be your answer.

What is Job Corps and How Can They Help With My CNA Training?

Job Corps was founded by the US Department of Labor, specifically to provide young men and women with the education they need to embark on a new and rewarding career. Job Corps offers training in over 100 career areas. CNA Training is one of the programs on their schedule.

Each year Job Corps provides technical and career training to over 100,000 eligible students, and assists with job placement, resumes, and interview skills after the CNA Training has been completed.

What Else Does Job Corps Help With?

In order to become a certified nursing assistant, you are first required to have a high school diploma, or the equivalent. If life seems overwhelming (maybe you’ve dropped out of school due to circumstances beyond your control) and you don’t see how you will ever reach your goal to become a certified nursing assistant, here’s what else Job Corps offers:

Help with earning your high school diploma or GED

Certified Nursing Assistant training classes

Free housing, meals, health care, and even a living allowance while on living campus

Assistance with job placement and transition into the work force

Is CNA Training through Job Corps For You?

Job Corps is designed especially for individuals who fall within certain age and income guidelines. Ideally, Job Corps can help highly motivated individuals reach career goals who may be struggling with a lack of finances which would otherwise prevent them from attending a college, even if they had a grant.

Sometimes, due to life circumstances, receiving a government grant to a local college isn’t even enough. If you are without proper transportation or housing, a free pass to college can still seem like an unreachable goal. The wonderful thing about Job Corps is the fact that they provide free housing and technical career training to individuals between the ages of 16 and 24. If you didn’t finish high school, and need to earn your GED before proceeding to your CNA Training Classes, that’s ok, Job Corps will assist you with this as well.

How to Apply for FREE CNA Training Classes through Job Corps

Check the Job Corps website to find a location near you. Give them a call and they will be happy to provide you with all the details about their Certified Nursing Assistant training classes. There are about three Job Corps Campuses in every state, so you should have no trouble finding one. If the Job Corps in your state happens to be located right in your city or town, you can even live at home, off campus, and commute back and forth for your CNA Training Classes.

We hope this article on obtaining free CNA training has been helpful. If you’ve had any experience with Job Corps, or are a graduate from the Job Corps CNA Training Class, please leave us a comment and tell us about your experience!

So you’ve made the decision to take the CNA training class to become a Certified Nursing Assistant? Congratulation! Not only is a career as a CNA rewarding and respected part of the health care industry, but according to the Department of Labor Statistics, certified nursing assistant job opportunities are plentiful and growing at a steady pace.

Whether you are new to the work force, fresh out of high school, or looking to switch from a dead end job or unemployment to the medical field, this is an ideal position to start with. You’ll probably be surprised at the variety of work environments and education options that are available for you.

Here’s a brief overview of the role of a CNA, education options, the CNA training course itself, and a brief summary of Certified Nursing Assistant jobs.

Certified Nursing Assistant Job Overview

The CNA, also referred to as a patient care technician, is responsible for providing basic daily care and plays an essential part in meeting the day to day needs of their patients. Depending on the work environment, the duties can vary greatly, but generally include:

Feeding or assisting during mealtime

Changing bedding and performing light cleaning

Assisting with grooming and dressing

Taking and recording vital signs

Assessing patient mood changes and daily eating habits

Helping with bathroom duties

Stool and urine sample collection

Range of motion and basic physical therapy assistance

CNAs are also expected to provide emotional support for hospital patients and nursing facility residents, since they spend more time with the patients than registered nurses or doctors.

CNA Training Opportunities

CNA training programs and requirements will differ slightly from state to state, so it’s important to contact the health care board or state board of nursing to find out the exact health care education requirements that must be met for your state. This is especially true for those considering taking a CNA training class online. Look for an accredited school that is approved by the state you plan to work in.

Other CNA training opportunities include: Red Cross CNA training, community college classes, and adult education courses. Depending on the need in your area, you may also find free CNA training offered by area nursing homes or larger hospitals in your area. Generally, free CNA training at any facility will include a contract that will tie you to employment at the facility for a certain amount of time. This can be a good thing, since you’ll have guaranteed employment once you receive your certification.

When deciding on your training, keep in mind that on-campus education offers the benefit of hands on training, access to lab facilities, and the ability to work with and learn from the instructor as well as other students. The downfall of on-campus training is the time factor involved, especially if you are working a full time job while completing your CNA training class. If you are diligent and have the self discipline required to take online courses, this type of situation will allow you the freedom to work at your own pace during hours when you are available.

Certified Nursing Assistant Jobs

There are more job opportunities for CNAs than one might think. Once you complete your training, you can find employment in the following:

Nursing home

Facilities for the developmentally disabled

Hospitals and urgent care centers

Working in the private residence of your client as a home health aide

Adult day care centers

Children’s hospitals

Birthing centers

There is a great need for certified nursing assistants. If this sounds like the ideal career for you, don’t let anything stand in your way CNA training. Regardless of age, previous work experience, or financial situation, if entering the health care field is your goal, get the information you need and make it happen…and keep checking back to CNA Training Class!

If you’ve signed up for Red Cross CNA training or other Certified Nursing Assistant training, it is probably at least somewhat because you know it’s a career that will always be in demand. But what happens if the money for nursing care dries up? Well the good news is, it isn’t going to happen.

Below is an interesting article about those concerns.

Concerns About Paying For Nursing Care Stays
by Mark Bradshaw

Americans are living longer. But along with that comes an increased chance that we will need nursing care in the future. Have you ever researched the cost of this type of care, either in a nursing home or, even, at home? It is not cheap. It can’t deplete savings very fast. That is why it pays to think about this issue in advance.

Long term care insurance (LTCi) is becoming more popular. People can buy it from private companies or get group coveage from their jobs. It covers different types of nursing care that people may need. Plans and prices vary, so you will have to look around to see if one is right for you.

Some are set up so the premiums can be deducted from federal taxes, and these are called tax qualified plans. Others are called non-tax qualified plans. They cannot be deducted.

In a few years, we should be getting more help from the CLASS act of health reform. It provides an optional program that people can choose on a voluntary basis. The new program is still not implemented, so I do not have all of the details. From what I understand, the payments will not be enough to cover the whole cost of nursing care, but it should help some people.

Of course, there are federal health plans today. But Medicare only pays for short nursing needs. Medicaid requies patients to spend most of their money and other assets in order to qualify. These are not perfect solutions either.

Some other alternatives may be considered. There are annuities and insurance policies with provisions for nursing care. There is not one right solution for all people, but it is very important to look into the alternatives in case you need it.

Do you know about (http://www.over50web.net/health-beauty/health-care/health-care-reform-long-term-nursing-care/) health reform and long term care? Learn more, and then decide if you (http://ezinearticles.com/?Do-You-Need-Private-Long-Term-Care-Insurance?&id=2404696/) need long term care insurance.

Red cross CNA classes are still some of the best opportunities for becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant. Though there are an increasing number of online CNA training programs, and many of them are very good, this is the type of profession requiring a lot of “hands-on” skills. This is the one caveat of online programs – you don’t get any actual lab experience.

When compared to campus courses, Red Cross CNA training ranks at the top of the list in terms of both low cost, and high-quality instruction. One benefit that campus courses still excel at is in the area of job placement. Most schools maintain a list of available employers and opportunities, and some have strong relationships with local hospitals, nursing homes, etc.

Depending on where in the country you live, the Red Cross probably has classes somewhere within driving distance. Of course this isn’t the case absolutely everywhere, but chances are better than good that you will find one not terribly far away. If you do live in one of those areas of the country where nothing is very close, then it becomes a moot point.

Cost is increasingly a factor for many people. Wherever you choose to get your Certified Nursing Assistant training and certification, it’s important to take advantage of available student loans. There are also a number of other grants and loans available.

In many cases, if you choose to train at a health-care facility such as a hospital or nursing home, they often will pick up the cost of your training. Generally, the facility will want a commitment to work there in return for covering your costs. These commitments usually last for one to two years. For those people unable to afford the costs on their own however, this is a wonderful opportunity.

Becoming a CNA is still one of the most rewarding career choices a person can make. As a Nursing Assistant, you are doing something truly worthwhile with yourself, and legitimately making a difference in the lives of your patients, and their families. What makes this an even better career choice is that it is very lucrative, meaning you’ll have a well-paying job that you can feel good about. And just as importantly, CNA’s enjoy a “sellers market” as far as job prospects are concerned. There is an ongoing shortage of trained professionals, and in nearly every part of the country, you will have your choice of many, many job openings and work environments.

Red Cross CNA classes still top the list of training opportunities, however much more importantly than where you get your certification, is that you simply get it somewhere. This is a choice you will never regret, and an investment that will pay you both personal and financial benefits for the rest of your working life.
