When you are working as a home health aide after CNA training, there may be time when you are asked to take care of your patient’s finances. You will need to pay their bills, buy their groceries, and deposit or withdraw their money from the bank. You may also need to balance their checkbook, ensure their bank account is correct, and write checks for them.

 

 

You will ONLY need to perform these tasks after CNA training if your patients, and the agency you work for after CNA training, inform you that you need to do them. Also, when you are asked to care for your patient’s finances, you must be very careful with their money. Treat their cash the same way you would treat yours.

 

When you are asked to take care of your patient’s finances, you need to learn two thing, which will be discussed during your CNA training: what financial abuse is and how to prevent it and how to handle another person’s finances.

CNA Training: Financial Abuse

 

While many CNAs are honest, hardworking individuals, there are individuals who would take advantage of the fact that their patients can no longer handle their own money. Patients are extremely susceptible to financial abuse from not only the CNAs who work with them, but family members, friends, lawyers, power of attorneys, and neighbors. Any of these individuals can steal their money, especially if they patients are elderly, have mental problems, are weak, or are injured.

 

Some examples of financial abuse are:

 

  • Cashing a patient’s checks when the patient has not asked you to
  • Singing an patient’s name to a legal document or check
  • Borrowing money from a patient and not returning it
  • Using or taking a patient’s belongings without permission
  • Tricking your patient into placing their bank account, deeds, or titles in your name

 

As an individual who has completed CNA training, it will be your job to keep an eye out for any signs of financial abuse, whether from your fellow CNAs, a patient’s family members, or anyone else. Report any changes in their bank account, missing cash or belongings, or any confusion or fear from patients about financial matters to your employer.

 

Caring for a Patient’s Finances After CNA Training

 

When you are asked to care for your patient’s finances after CNA training, you have to be very careful to ensure you do it correctly. Here are just a few tips.

 

  • Pay all bills on time to avoid late fees.
  • Save all receipts from bills you pay, groceries you purchase, and credit cards. Check each receipt to ensure it is correct and if there is a mistake, make sure the patient is refunded.
  • After CNA training, talk to your patients and their family about the bills you are paying for them. Find out what bills are normal, and uncover any mistakes as quickly as possible. For instance, if your patient tells you their water bill is generally $50 a month, but it has suddenly jumped to $200, there may be a leak that must be addressed and fixed.
  • Balance your patient’s checkbook after CNA training and make sure the balance adds up with their bank statement.
  • If your patient has some bills that are paid automatically, always make sure money is deposited in the bank before the bill is due. Then, ensure the payments are taken out on time and that they are the correct amount.

 

After CNA training, one of the tasks you may be asked to perform as a home health aide is handling finances. Make sure you know how to correctly pay your patients bills and protect them from financial abuse after CNA training.
