How to Become a CNA Training Instructor

cna trainingBecoming a CNA training instructor is an important part of helping individuals fulfill their dream of working in the medical field. As a CNA instructor, you will be responsible for teaching your student how to properly care for their patients and how to properly use medical equipment they will come into contact with during their employment. If you are interested in changing the lives of many students who wish to become certified nursing assistants, consider the following information.

CNA Training Instructor Education and Experience

Prior to becoming a CNA training instructor, you must complete a certain amount of education.

  • Before you obtain your nursing degree, you may have to take a CNA training course.
  • You must be a registered nurse (RN). This can be done in two ways. You may either earn your associate’s degree in nursing, which will take about two years to complete, or you can earn your Bachelor’s degree in nursing, which generally takes four years to finish.

After receiving your nursing degree, each state requires you to take a state approved test called the National Council Licensure Examination. Once this test is passed, you will be able to call yourself a registered nurse and will be registered as such with the state.

Experience is important to CNA training instructors. Most instructors have at least two years of experience under their belt before they attempt to become CNA instructors. You can gain experience in several different establishments as an RN.

  • Nursing homes
  • Rehabilitation centers
  • Hospitals
  • Physician’s offices
  • Home health

After you have worked as an RN for at least two years, you may take the Train-the-Trainer certification class. This class is usually required by states, and must be completed before you can become a CNA training instructor. Each state will have its own requirements for how CNAs should be taught and what they should be taught. In this class, you will learn those requirements and learn how to properly teach adult students.

Where Can a CNA Instructor Work?

CNA instructors can find employment at many different establishments offering training to students and staff, including:

  • Hospitals
  • Nursing Homes
  • Community Colleges
  • Online Colleges
  • High Schools
  • Health Departments

Job Outlook and Pay Rate for CNA Training Instructors

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistic, www.bls.gov, the job outlook for CNA instructors is good. This is mostly due to the lack of instructors in many states. Students wishing to become CNAs have been turned away by many institutions because there were not enough instructors to teach them.

Salaryexpert.com states the annual average salary of a CNA training instructor is somewhere between $42,800 and $69,000. Part time instructors will earn much less per year, but generally earn about $25 per hour, depending on experience and education.
