Have you made your list of New Year’s resolutions yet? While many of your resolutions may be normal, like vowing to lose weight or eat fewer sweets, there are some resolutions you should be making because you have completed CNA training.

Yes, because of CNA training. Your career is a big part of your life, and it is just as important as any other area of your life, and for that reason, it is critical that you have a separate set of resolutions specifically for it.

Not sure where to start? Here are a few resolutions you can think about after CNA training and for the new year.

After CNA Training: New Year Resolutions

  • Resolve to be Patient- Being patient in a high-stress career after CNA training isn’t as simple as it sounds. However, this resolution is important to ensuring your new career is a successful and long lasting one.
  • Resolve to Remember- Doctors are not the most socially adept medical professionals. While many remember the social skills they learned from spending their last 10 to 15 years in school, many don’t. Be gentle after CNA training and don’t get too frustrated when you have to remind a new resident that bathing is not an option.
  • Resolve to Not Snark- It’s easy to become frustrated with individuals who have only recently completed CNA training and don’t know everything you do. Be patient and don’t gripe. Remember what it was like when you first finished CNA training. Teach them as much as you can and help them learn just like the CNAs before you did for you.
  • Resolve to Work- Your work after CNA training is a 24 hour, seven day a week job. Remember that and resolve not to complain the next time your supervisor asks you to work a weekend or a different shift than you are used to. Your patients need assistance all the time, not just from 7 am to 3 pm.
  • Resolve to Breathe- Sometimes making it through just one shift is just too hard after CNA training. If your patients aren’t vying for your time, your supervisor is demanding for you to finish your paperwork, and a lunch break seems like a far off dream. When these circumstances seem like too much to handle and the clock seems to move as slow as molasses in January, take a deep breath. You will get through this; there will be harder days, but there will be easier ones as well.
  • Resolve to Leave Work Behind- When you go to work after CNA training, you should be at work. When you go home, though, your only thoughts should be of home. Don’t bring your work home with you and vice versa. This will ensure the stress from one does not bleed into the other.
  • Resolve to Buy New Clothes- It’s the new year, so why are you wearing the same old scrubs and shoes? Invest in some new ones and give yourself a new look after CNA training.
