Does it seem like you are always tired after CNA training? You spend eight to sixteen hours a day on your feet performing patient care tasks, and the rest of your life is waiting when you clock out. It can seem sometimes like your day never ends, and like sleep is a stranger.


After CNA training, sleep deprivation can be extremely dangerous for not only your patients, but your health as well. You may be unable to provide the best care for your patients, make important decisions, react quickly, and you put yourself at risk for diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.


Figuring out how to get enough sleep and reducing that tired feeling can be a big investment in your health that will pay out greatly later on in your life.

Tips for Preventing Sleep Deprivation After CNA Training


If you want to be able to perform your job correctly, take care of your family, and still feel great at the end of the day, consider these tips for preventing sleep deprivation after CNA training.


  • Nap Early- Working during the day after CNA training often means you are tired by the time you get home, and when you have the day off, you may want to catch up on all that lost sleep during the day. If you want to feel energetic and be able to sleep at night, though, make sure you nap before five o’clock in the evening. If you fall asleep after this time, you may have a difficult time falling asleep later on when it is bedtime.


  • Limit Sleep- It may be tempting to sleep three or four hours in the afternoon when you are extremely tired from working after CNA training, but that extra sleep now can ruin your seven to nine hours later. Sleep for 30 minutes only. You’ll be surprised how rested you feel from even this short nap.


  • Night Shift- Working the night shift after CNA training can be hard for any CNA, even those who have worked the shift for a while. While you might be energized at the beginning of the shift, by the end you are dragging and ready to crawl into bed. If you go to bed as soon as you get home, make sure to take a thirty minute nap right before your shift. You may also want to take a ten minute break in the night and take a short nap in a quiet, dark place to feel more energized during your shift.


  • Don’t Drive- When you leave the medical facility you work at after CNA training, don’t drive if you are feeling drowsy; you may fall asleep at the wheel or put your life in danger. Instead, pull off of the road at the nearest rest stop or parking lot and take a short nap. This small bit of sleep can help re-energize you and help you make it home safely.
