  • Always assess the situation first before you think about lifting or transferring a patient.
  • You aren’t being paid to lift a patient by yourself, so don’t. Wait for help.
  • When lifting or transferring a patient after CNA training, always make sure you are using a draw sheet or a gait belt. Gait belts are usually provided by the medical facility you work for. If you don’t have one, ask your supervisor if one is available.
  • Use your legs. Allowing your spine to carry the weight of your patient can easily result in an injury.
  • If you feel like you need to twist or pivot, take a second to listen to your body. Does the movement feel natural and comfortable or do you have to strain to move? If the second choice is your answer, avoid that movement.
  • Stand as close to the bed, wheelchair, and patient as you can. This will increase the amount of power you have while lifting.
  • Get plenty of sleep every night and take steps to reduce the stress in your life after CNA training. When you are experiencing mental or physical fatigue, you may not be thinking clearly or focusing properly on the task at hand. This can cause you to be less careful and may result in an injury.
  • If the patient has an injury or is too heavy to lift for even two individuals, don’t try to lift him with your body. Speak to the nurse and see if his care plan will allow you to use a Hoyer lift or mechanical lift for transferring.
